2nd Grade Harward Farms Field Trip

Submitted by diana.guinn on

On Wednesday, April 6th, the second grade students from Sage Creek Elementary had the pleasure of visiting Harward Farms in Springville for their annual Farm Field Day.  How much do YOU know about Agriculture? Well, we learned things like: a plant needs five things to grow:  water, air, sunlight, soil, and nutrients; the Z.I.P. you gets from eating beef stands for zinc, iron, and protein; and a mother sheep is called a ewe!  Thank you, Harward Farms, for an amazing day of learning!!

Judie Nielsen recieves the Excellence in Service Award

Sage Creek Elementary School is proud to announce that Judie Nielsen, first grade teacher, has received the Excellence in Service Award 2011. For twenty-four years Judie has dedicated herself to the service of the children of Sage Creek.  She has influenced hundreds of children that have had the privilege of having her as a first grade teacher. She has not only given them a good foundation in reading, writing, math and science but also given them the ability to build good character and become positive, productive citizens of the community.

Mrs. Nielsen’s presence at Sage Creek has also affected many others. She has gone above and beyond what is normally expected of teachers, by spending countless hours writing grants and sharing them with others.  Her innovative and tireless hours of grant writing has benefited many classrooms, providing them with earphones, microphones, easels, rugs, reading centers, doc cams, books and much more.

Literacy Month was Judie’s creation and for over a decade the children at Sage Creek have grown to love not only reading Dr. Seuss stories but learning to write and create their own stories as well.  Literacy month has been a great catalyst for integrating the arts into all subject matters and creating an education full of color and excitement.

Many teachers have looked to Mrs. Nielsen as a mentor to emulate in their own teaching.  She has been a great resource for new teachers and veteran teachers alike. Judie’s years of work on as the school community council facilitator has been a wonderful liaison for the parents and community to keep Sage Creek a top rated school.  The data driven report card of her creation has let the public know the high standards of Nebo District and Sage Creek School.

Mrs. Nielsen is retiring this year and she is leaving an incredible legacy behind her.   She will always be loved at Sage Creek and missed beyond measure

Dr. Seuss Day!

Thanks to the efforts of long time first grade teacher, Mrs. Judie Nielsen, on March 2nd, Sage Creek Elementary celebrated Dr. Seuss' birthday in grand style!   Students and teachers alike wore crazy hats all day to pay homage to The Cat in the Hat, one of Suess's most famous books.  There was a hat parade for all students and a kazoo concert performed by the teachers at an assembly.   The student council put on a fun skit and students participated in a read-a-thon throughout the day.  Dr. Seuss will always be alive at Sage Creek.!

On Wednesday, February 23rd, the Provo District Dental Alliance (dentist's wives) ‘treated’ the 2nd grade students at Sage Creek to an amazing marionette show, in support of National Dental Health month.  The puppets taught the children the importance of taking good care of their teeth by brushing twice a day, flossing once each day, eating healthy foods, and visiting their dentist twice a year!

Valentine's Day at Sage Creek!

If I could be the postman for just one single time,
I'd choose to carry Valentines so lovely and so fine.
I would not mind the heavy load, or mind my tired feet.
If I could scatter happiness all up and down the street.

Cupid was alive and well at Sage Creek on February 14th.
The second grade students participated in classroom
rotation celebrations including:  cookie decorating, word
searches, candy heart graphs, holiday stories, passing out
valentines, valentine glyphs, and decorating containers.
"It was the BEST day ever," one student said as she left
with her spoils!

on a second grade core topic and conducted simple
experiments and observations. We placed our projects on
display in our individual classrooms and rotated through
each other's rooms to see what was discovered. Thanks for
your encouragement and excitement for science!!

Job Shadow Day at Sage Creek

Submitted by diana.guinn on

On Wednesday, February 2nd, student Caden Brown from Mapleton Junior High School joined Mrs. Brown's second grade class at Sage Creek Elementary for their annual 7th Grade Job Shadow Day. Caden read some of his very own stories he had published back in second grade to the students. He also worked with them on multi-digit math problems and winter art projects. He was able to participate in their reading stratgey discussion during Readers' Workshop on 'questioning', in addition to enjoying a fun-filled inside recess, due to the freezing temperatures outside. When asked what he liked best about the day, he said, "Just hanging out with the kids!" Thanks Caden, and MJHS, for sharing your 'budding' teaching talents with us!
