Library Olympic Reading Program
We have an Olympic reading program going on in the library at Sage Creek. You may have heard a little about it, the kids are excited about earning their bronze, silver, and gold medals! Here is how it works: When a child completes reading a book he can bring a sheet of paper into Mrs. Fullmer that is signed by an adult in his household that has the name(s) of the book(s), the number of pages read, the name of the student, and the adult signature. Please wait until the book is completed before reporting it to the library. For 100 pages of reading the student earns a bronze medal, for 200 pages a silver, and for 300 pages a gold. Mrs. Fullme has told students that they are totally welcome to be the Michael Phelps of Sage Creek reading and can receive as many medals as they earn throughout the year. If the books that they have completed don't add up to 100 pages yet that is ok--we write them on a card and the pages accumulate over the year. Please let even the more beginning readers know that by the end of the year a gold medal is totally achievable if they take it one book at a time. Dads & Donuts
PTA celebrated the book fair this week with a special Dads & Donuts on Wed morning. All who came enjoyed eating a donut and enjoying a good book! The book fair will be open the remainder of the Oct 24-28 week before and after school, during all recesses, and through SEP conferences both Thurs and Fri evenings.

Ms. Howard Receives Award
A huge SHOUT-OUT to our very own Kristin Howard, our art and music teacher at Sage Creek. Ms. Howard won the Nebo School District PEAK Performer Award for her Positive Energy and Kindness (PEAK). The school recognizes individuals throughout the district who consistently go above and beyond to make their setting in Nebo District a better place. Ms. Howard attended the school board meeting on Oct 12 where she received the award. Way to go Ms. Howard!!
"What's Your Story" Reflections Assembly
Student's at Sage Creek we awarded for their Reflections art pieces to the theme "What's Your Story" on Thursday. There were over 250 entries from the school. Thanks to all who particpated and to the PTA for running the Reflections contest. More pictures are on our facebook page.
Sage Creek "Go the Distance Award"
Congratulations to the students who recieved the "Go the Distance Award" at Sage Creek this week. This award recognises those students who are going the extra to make Sage Creek a great place to be.
Pen Pals from Taiwan
Students in our Chinese classes are writing to Pen Pals in Taiwan. Working with Amanda Conklin, director of the Su Ma Ma Club, the students compose letters and information about themselves in Chinese, to elementary students in Taiwan. They love sending the letters and are even more excited to receive letters in return! The exchange happens several times each year.
Sage Creek Staff Spotlights
This week, we are selecting Mr. Bowden, sixth grade teacher, and Mr. Andersen, school counselor, to spotlight.
Mr. Anthony Bowden teaches sixth grade and is definitely a favorite among students! He highly values education and himself is a lifelong learner. Mr. Bowden holds a Bachelor's Degree in Exercise Sports Science from the University of Utah, a Bachelor's Degree in Elementary Educastion from Utah State University, and a Master's Degree with an elementary mathematics focus in Elementary Education from Southern Utah University. He loves to do anything outdoors - particularly waterski, ride dirtbikes with his boys, and hunt and fish with his family. He is married to Amy and they have six delightful children, five boys and one girl. Mr. Bowden's motto when teaching math and something he tried to instill in his students, "If in doubt, draw a picture." Mr. Bowden always keeps things lively for his students and coworkers and we are happy to have him a part of our faculty!
Mr. Troy Andersen is one of those people that everybody loves to be around. As a school counselor, he spends a significant amount of his time working with individuals one-on-one and has developed many positive relationships with students here. He also goes into classrooms regularly and teaches students skills that help them. One of his focuses this year is empowering students to recognize if/when they can solve problems or when they need an adult to intervene. His presentation on "little deals, big deals" has generated much positive discussion providing students skills to help them address a "little deal" such as somebody cutting in line in front of them - he works with students on appropriate stragies to deal with "little deals" such as just saying "oh well" or asking the other person to stop. And, of course, helping students know when to get an adult's help and if ever in doubt, ask an adult. He loves watching students make good choices and seeing their progress towards independence. Mr. Andersen is married and he and his wife have one son. He loves doing anything outdoors and spending time with his family. He holds a Master's Degree from Brigham Young University and thinks he has the best job in the whole school!
Opera Visits Sage Creek!
Vocal Dimensions through Utah State Arts, Inc, visited Sage Creek School on Oct 11. The students were delighted to participate in the opera performed as students were pulled from the audience to participate in several scenes of the opera, as well as the entire audience participating throughout. The purpose of the assembly is to expose students to the opera and teach them the basics of that particular type of art form. The performers and student volunteers put on the opera of The Three Pigs.
